Summary:
William Paterson University invites application for the full time grant supported position of Hawkins Academic Success Coach within the College of Education.
Reporting to the Associate Dean of the College of Education, the duties and responsibilities of the Hawkins Academic Success coach includes responsibilities include managing a student case load and implementing a case model approach across all program areas and with partner school districts.
The Hawkins Academic Success Coach works with students to assess academic and non-academic needs, develop success plans, and support participation in the success plans so that candidates meet criteria to advance in a teacher licensure pathway. The Hawkins Academic Success Coach works with the Project Director and project participants and leaders on all activities, including coordination of academic mentoring, supplemental instruction, and the summer Aspiring Educators program. The Hawkins Academic Success Coach attends meetings of the Hawkins team to share and collaborate on Hawkins activities, and report progress toward project objectives. This includes developing relationships and coordinating with staff and leaders of existing academic and non-academic supports at the University. The Academic Success Coach works with project partner school districts to help prepare high school students to meet the academic requirements to progress in a teacher preparation program.
More about the program: The U.S. Department of Education's Augustus F. Hawkins program is designed to increase the number of well-prepared teachers from underrepresented backgrounds, resulting in a more diverse teacher workforce prepared to more equitably teach in low performing elementary and secondary schools and close performance and opportunity gaps. William Paterson University has been awarded a four-year grant to develop a Hawkins center for excellence. The Associate Dean of the College of Education serves as the Hawkins project director. The Hawkins Academic Success Coach is responsible for the organization and day-to-day operation of project wrap-around services that support student recruitment, retention, and advancement in teacher preparation.
Duties:
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Manage a caseload of identified students.
- Access student information via internal data management systems (e.g., Navigate) to ascertain curricular progress and academic standing.
- Regularly assess academic and non-academic needs to create and monitor individualized student success plans.
- Meet and check-in regularly with students to provide comprehensive support.
- Connect students to internal and external resources.
- Schedule and conduct student success activities of the summer Aspiring Educators program.
- Maintain records of student contact and success plans.
- Develop instruments and implement data collection to assess impact of project activities, including the academic success plans.
- Assist the Project Director in compiling data, creating and disseminating print and/or electronic reports, newsletters and other documents on the activities of the Hawkins project.
- Participate in meetings to coordinate project activities in line with timelines and budgets, to integrate project activities into existing initiatives, and review progress toward project objectives.
- Expand and promote dual enrollment for high school students.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Hawkins Project Director.
Qualifications:
Required qualifications:
- Earned bachelor’s degree in education, social justice, DEI or related field from an accredited institution of higher education.
- A demonstrated commitment and track record working with historically underrepresented populations in the field of education with an intentional focus on advancement and readiness
- Demonstrated experience working in or with P-12 public schools/teachers and/or in fields/areas related to teacher education or certification
- A minimum of one year of professional experience working with P-12 or higher education students to promote student success or navigate educational systems.
- Demonstrated experience communicating complex processes and information.
- Pro?ciency using online technologies and ability to learn and adapt to new tools.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to prioritize duties and navigate in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusion.
- Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills with proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse faculty, students, staff, and other stakeholders.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience providing academic counseling/coaching, motivational strengths-based coaching.
- Experience working as an academic advisor in higher education.
