Job Description
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College is accepting applications for a full-time Electrician (Trades Technician III).
This is a skilled trades position with responsibility to perform technically difficult and routine installation, repair, maintenance and service of electrical equipment relating to college owned buildings and areas.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Extensive knowledge of electrical equipment and systems practices, the National Electric Code and other building codes and regulations pertaining to electrical work. Ability to diagnose, service, and repair all types of electrical systems. Ability to read and interpret blueprints both hardcopy and electronic. Ability to plan, prioritize and perform work. Ability to provide oversight to or lead co-workers and contractors to ensure that associated electrical work and work practices conform to state and local codes and regulations. Excellent oral communication skills. Ability to use computer programs to plan and report including Excel, Word, and computer based work order reporting. Ability to work effectively with others to achieve goals and resolve problems, with an emphasis on customer service. High school graduate or GED equivalent required.
A current valid Virginia Master Electrician License is required. Extensive knowledge of electrical equipment and systems. Significant experience in electrical maintenance, repair, wiring, and troubleshooting. A valid driver’s license is required with the ability to obtain a Virginia driver’s license by the time of employment.
Must be able to work 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and be available for call-back as needed during evening hours, weekends, and holidays as emergent issues arise.
