Summary:

The Department of Internal Medicine is comprised of 11 sub-specialty Divisions, 11 Division Chiefs, 7 Associate Chairs, 352 full-time faculty, 301 part-time and affiliate faculty, 201 APPs for a total of 855 providers. The Communications Director will oversee the hierarchical strategic messaging across the 11 Divisions and 7 programmatic areas of the Department in alignment with the tripartite mission of the School of Medicine (SoM) and Health System (VCUHS). They will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating all administrative communications in partnership with the Department Chair and Senior Administrator as a liaison with the Division Chiefs and Associate Chairs. They will participate in the executive oversight of the strategic updates needed for the lockstep messaging with the 11 sub-specialty Divisions. They typically serve as liaisons between internal departments or functional areas in order to achieve operational goals and serve as a resource to lower-level staff. Their decision-making has a significant impact on service delivery and departmental success. They will be responsible for resolving complex and timely communication issues independently.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leading the strategic communications across the Department of Internal Medicine, including, but not
limited to, key initiative updates in partnership with the Department Chair and Senior Administrator,
partnership with the School of Medicine and Health System communications teams, participation and
leadership in bi-weekly Division Chief and Associate Chair updates, liaison to the 11 Division Chiefs, 7
Associate Administrators across the Divisions and programmatic areas, SoM and VCUHS business
development and marketing teams. Report on and analyze all aspects of communications and
marketing, and ensure effective evaluation mechanisms are in place to measure success. Developing
communications and marketing strategies and plans that cover the full mix of communications and
marketing tools, including media and public relations, internal communications, brand marketing,
advertising, direct marketing, digital and social media. and production of materials. Implementing a
marketing and communications strategy to build brand awareness, market services, promote income
generation, communicate programs, activities, and impact. Performing market research and needs analysis.

Required Education and Experience

-- Bachelor's degree in communications or marketing and 5+ years relevant experience or any combination of relevant experience and education that would contribute directly to the position.
-- Strong written communication skills with an understanding of how to write to and connect with different audiences.
-- Demonstrated ability to work with a high level of accuracy and manage sensitive information.
-- Results driven with proven success leading and managing projects.
-- Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal and time management skills.
-- Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team, is self-motivated and proactive.
-- Experienced with social media, email platforms, and Microsoft Office applications.
-- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Education and Experience

-- Master's degree in communications or marketing.
-- 10+ years relevant experience at the executive level across multiple organizations and hierarchical structures, familiarity with health care systems and environments
