JOB SUMMARY

About the Fire Safety Systems Designer position:
The Fire Safety Systems Designer position will provide the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Division of Facilities, Planning, and Management (FP&M) with the expertise to review building plans and projects and evaluate which fire detection, fire alarm, and fire-suppression equipment should be included/update to meet IFC. The individual in this role will be working with vendors, A&E/Campus Renovation Services, and State Large Projects for site consultation, construction, and site visit inspections.

About the Division of Facilities, Planning, and Management:
The Division of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of the UW-Madison campus in support of the university's education, research, and outreach activities. FP&M works behind the scenes to coordinate campus planning, manage design and construction, maintain and operate buildings and grounds, supply utility services, ensure health and safety, and provide parking and transportation services.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides engineering expertise in designing, modifying and constructing Institution facilities, including buildings and physical plant infrastructure to ensure the Institution is meeting regulatory and professional engineering standards.

  • 25% Assesses, designs, modifies, and constructs institution facilities utilizing engineering techniques and best practices
  • 25% Monitors, interprets, communicates, and applies all established building codes, policies, and procedures
  • 15% Liaises facility construction plans with internal and external stakeholders and vendors, and provides engineering guidance and recommendations to align with strategic facility planning
  • 15% Assists other work units in evaluating building mechanical system conditions, when requested
  • 15% Construction plan reviews for fire alarm, sprinklers, and kitchen fire suppression systems per NFPA 13, 17, 20, 72 and IBC/IFC
  • 5% Collaborate with State of Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services to assume responsibility for UW-Madison plan review

EDUCATION

Required
Associate's Degree
With preferred focus in Fire Protection Engineering/Technology or related field

Preferred
Bachelor's Degree
With preferred focus in Fire Protection Engineering/Technology or related field

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:
- 2 years of relevant work experience

Preferred:
- 5 years of relevant work experience
- Licensed State of Wisconsin Designer of Engineering Systems - Fire Protection
- Licensed State of Wisconsin Fire Detection, prevention & Suppression Inspector

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

Required
Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards

Preferred
PE - Professional Engineer

SALARY

Minimum $75,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications

The minimum salary for this position is $75,000, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
