Fire & Life Safety Specialist

JOB SUMMARY

The Fire & Life Safety Specialist position at the University of Wisconsin-Madison plays a vital role in promoting a pro-active, comprehensive, and full encompassing Fire & Life Safety program across 35 million square feet of buildings on campus. The incumbent will make recommendations for the control of identified hazards and assess hazards so that work, recreation, and research can be performed safely and in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards.

A typical day in this role would include:
- Performing routine fire inspections on all building types of occupancies across campus (ex. assembly, residential, business, high-hazard, storage)
- Consulting and collaborating with campus stakeholders on how to best address fire safety issues identified during routine facility inspections
- Providing hands on fire extinguisher training to campus students and employees

Other daily duties include assisting with AED inspection, life safety system impairments, Hot Work over-sight, and evaluation and understanding standards and codes related to fire and life safety.

This position will be within the Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) department under the Division of Facilities, Planning, and Management (FP&M) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The EHS department provides guidance, technical consultations, and expertise to the campus community in the areas of biological, chemical, environmental, engineering, radiation, and fire safety. FP&M is a full spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of the UW-Madison campus in support of the university's education, research, and outreach activities.

REPSONSIBILITIES

Identifies and develops plans to address safety issues, provides consultation, and tracks and manages cases in a specific area of specialty so all work, recreation, and research can be performed safely and in compliance will all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Makes recommendations for the control of identified hazards and assesses hazards using relevant regulatory methodologies.

• 5% Secures resources and schedules logistics for a safety program
• 35% Identifies operational and safety issues and develops improvement plans and standard operating procedures
• 5% Provides knowledge and guidance to internal and external stakeholders including leadership, in a specialized area of safety such biosafety, chemical, hazardous materials, agriculture, lake, radiation, and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
• 5% Directs logistical activities, allocates resources and investigates components of specific health and safety cases
• 25% Communicates findings to necessary stakeholders
• 5% Reviews industry updates and may assist in developing safety communication materials based on industry changes
• 5% Perform facility inspections on a semi-annual basis, prepare detailed written reports and communicate identified discrepancies working with stakeholders for a safe resolution
• 5% Research NFPA, IBC, and IFC as necessary to provide knowledgeable solutions and alternatives to mitigate unsafe conditions
• 5% Assist with developing policies and procedures for promoting a pro-active and comprehensive fire safety program
• 5% Assist UWPD emergency management with implementation of building specific occupant emergency plans

EDUCATION

Preferred
Bachelor's Degree

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:
- Certified Fire Inspector I (CFI)
- At least one year of experience inspecting public buildings

SALARY

Minimum $65,000 ANNUAL (12 months)

The minimum salary for this position is $65,000, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
