The Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture invites applications for a 12-month tenure-track faculty position as an Assistant/Associate Professor in Outdoor Recreation (40% Teaching | 35% Extension | 25% Research) with a potential start for summer/fall of 2023. The individual must be committed to excellence in research, teaching, and Extension and have a strong interest in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. The University of Tennessee is one of two land grant institutions in the state, and is the state's public flagship university. The Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries is the comprehensive natural resources program in the state, and consists of 31 teaching, research, and Extension faculty; 13 professional and 8 administrative staff members; and more than 350 students. The department's mission is to advance the science and sustainable management of natural resources to promote their health, utilization, and appreciation in Tennessee, the region, and beyond through programs in teaching, research, Extension and outreach.
The City of Knoxvilleis a hidden gem with a beautiful and walkable downtown, varied nightlife, active neighborhoods, and eclectic shopping and restaurants. The UT campus is located within easy driving distance to Asheville, Nashville, Atlanta, and the Great Smoky Mountains. In addition, USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis and U.S. Geological Survey scientists are located on or near campus, offering excellent opportunities for collaborative research and teaching. Oak Ridge National Laboratory is nearby and many opportunities for collaboration and career development are provided by the University of Tennessee Oak Ridge Innovation Institute.
This position offers an exciting opportunity to build an outdoor recreation program in teaching and Extension based on applied research. Expectations of the position will include engagement in university and professional service activities and a commitment to the Land Grant University mission of teaching, research and outreach. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research, teaching, and Extension activities in outdoor recreation; will serve as faculty advisor for the wildland recreation concentration; and be required to teach four courses in outdoor recreation, primarily in the undergraduate curriculum. Potential research and Extension focus areas include sustainable ecotourism, entrepreneurship, economic development in outdoor recreation, interpretation, and protected area management. This position is expected to obtain extramural funding to support their program. In addition to securing extramural funding, the successful candidate will be expected to publish in the peer-refereed literature, advise undergraduate students, direct graduate students in research, serve on departmental committees, and participate in professional societies. Other responsibilities will include developing an undergraduate degree program in outdoor recreation.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications: A Ph.D. in outdoor recreation, tourism and management, forestry, human dimensions in natural resources, or a closely related field, completed prior to the position start date. The finalist will be required to furnish official transcripts prior to the position start date.
Preferred Qualifications: Expertise and experience in wildland recreation, statistics, and a strong publication record; success in grant writing; a record of collaboration and cooperative research with state and federal natural resource agencies and non-government organizations.
