Job Description Summary
The Center for Health Justice Project Manager (PM) for Strategy and Operations is a unique opportunity to help develop and grow Deeply Rooted, a community-academic collaborative that leverages the healing power of nature to promote health and wellbeing in Black and Brown Philadelphia neighborhoods. The Penn Medicine Center for Health Justice (CHJ) has a vision to achieve health through racial, economic, and environmental justice for Black, Brown, and other people and neighborhoods harmed by structural inequities. The Center sits within the Center for Health Care Transformation and Innovation (CHTI) and has two focus areas - transformation of health systems operations (Health Justice Transformation) and rigorous research and community action (Urban Health Lab). The Project Manager will work closely with the CHJ Faculty Director, Dr. Eugenia South and Director, Nicole Thomas on Deeply Rooted, as well as other neighborhood-based initiatives that advance the science of urban health.

The Penn Urban Health Lab is dedicated to designing and testing individual and community-level interventions to build healthy neighborhoods. The UHL has a focus in urban nature, blight remediation, violence prevention, and structural racism that has impacted Black and Brown communities. The Project Manager will devote significant time to the development and growth of Deeply Rooted, which seeks to leverage the well-documented health benefits of neighborhood greenspace to promote community health and address the root causes of racial health disparities. Deeply Rooted is a partnership between community organizations, health systems, and other stakeholders designed to: create ample new green space in Black and Brown Philadelphia neighborhoods, support youth job and leadership training, and activate new and existing greenspaces to build social cohesion and collective efficacy.

The ideal candidate (1) is passionate about the health and well-being of Black and Brown communities, (2) has experience leading large multimillion-dollar academic-community programming or large multimillion-dollar community-based programming, (3) is a proven leader with strategic, organizational, and managerial skills, (4) is excellent at relationship management, and (5) has strong writing and communication skills. A master's degree and 5-7 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities
  • The Project Manager will: (1) Oversee the development, implementation, and day-to-day activities of Deeply Rooted including project mapping, ensuring project milestones are met, regulatory requirements, data collection and management, monitoring project outcomes against benchmarks and providing solutions for variance, (2) Manage and support the Deeply Rooted team members including the Community Engagement Project Manager in organizing, operationalizing, and documenting community engagement activities across all Deeply Rooted partner neighborhoods, (3) Cultivate and maintain partnerships with Penn Medicine, CHOP, and other stakeholders, (4) Lead all greenspace implementation efforts including managing strategic partnerships, planning and tracking efforts, and achieving targets for tree plantings, vacant lot greening, and community co-designed mini park creation, (5) Communicate regularly with CHJ Faculty Director and Director about progress, issues, innovations, and solutions to advance the CHJ research and community-focused action agenda, (6) Create project dashboard, set benchmarks, gather data, and establish and evaluate metrics, (7) Assist in writing, preparation, and submission of manuscripts, opinion pieces, and grants, and (8) Prepare progress reports and regular communications and presentations for CHJ meetings, as well as other internal and external meetings.


Qualifications

  • Master of Science and 5 to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
