Job Description

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry invites applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor position in organic chemistry with an emphasis in flow chemistry beginning August 2024. We seek candidates with a PhD in organic chemistry and relevant postdoctoral experience in the area of flow chemistry specializing in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals.

The mission of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is to carry out and disseminate the results of original research in fundamental and applied areas of chemistry. The department expects its faculty members to publish the results of research in peer-reviewed publications and at scientific meetings, and to secure external funding for the work. The department is committed to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels to a diverse student population.

The successful candidate will establish a vigorous research program in organic flow chemistry, train and supervise research students at all levels, direct the work of doctoral students, publish their research in peer-reviewed journals and present their work at scientific meetings of regional, national and international scope. They will be expected to seek major external funding for their research.

UMSL is a partner of the St. Louis based API Innovation Center (APIIC), a non-profit organization dedicated to enabling the delivery of market-competitive commercial supply of U.S.-made active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) to address national health security. The new faculty is also expected to collaborate with the center.

Candidates are expected to have a strong dedication towards excellence in teaching. As an Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry, they will teach courses in organic chemistry at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. They may also be expected to teach courses in introductory chemistry depending on the needs of the Department. They will also provide valuable service contributions to their department, campus, and their profession.

Qualifications

Require Qualifications:

PhD in Organic Chemistry and relevant postdoctoral or other postgraduate experience with a specialization in flow chemistry applicable to the synthesis of pharmaceuticals by start of the appointment.

An established record of publication:

· Experience teaching at the collegiate level (as a teaching assistant or instructor of record)

· Experience supporting the success of students from diverse backgrounds

· Grant writing
