The Division of Biological and Biomedical Systems: BBSis one of the four divisions in the School of Science and Engineering (SSE) established through UMKC Forward, a university initiative to create multidisciplinary learning, academics, research, and outreach. BBS has focus areas in neurobiology, developmental biology, structural biology, and cell interactions with the environment, using model systems includingE. coli,Saccharomyces, plants, fruit flies and zebrafish. For many years, 20-30% of the SSE research was focused on biomedical engineering, but the Biomedical Engineering Program became a separate, official program in Fall 2023. BME research is often performed in conjunction with UMKC's Schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. BBS grants BS, BA, BS/MS, MA, MS, and PhD degrees, including BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Biomedical Engineering.
