Job Description Summary:
The Postdoctoral Fellow will work under the supervision of Dr. Hao Gao, Professor in Radiation Oncology. This lab research focuses on applying computational mathematical techniques for benchmarking 3D dosimetry systems and developing models. In addition, there are multiple outstanding clinicians, faculty, and research staff in the department and across the institution with whom the postdoctoral associate may collaborate.

Postdoctoral scholars at the University of Kansas Medical Center are individuals who have received their terminal degree and who have opted to pursue further training in a postdoctoral appointment. Postdoctoral scholarship is a time-limited appointment, the primary purpose of which is to provide research and/or scholarly training for an academic or research career. A postdoctoral scholar at KUMC is expected to: Participate in a full-time regimen of advanced training and research, train under the supervision of a faculty research mentor who will provide the opportunity for collaborative and independent research, as well promote publication of findings and preparation of research grants as determined by a mutual agreement between the postdoctoral scholar and the mentor, participate in relevant academic activities related to the preparation for a career in research or academia, participate in the University's Individual Development Plan policy for postdoctoral scholars, have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree (such as MD, DVM, PsyD, PharmD, etc.), and candidates should have strong English skills and demonstrate an ability to write and communicate with a scientific audience. Candidates must be able to independently plan, multi-task and complete projects. Ideally, the fellow will be expected to design and execute experiments, analyze data, write, and prepare independent grant applications and manuscripts for scientific publications, and supervise graduate students.

Required Qualifications

Education: PhD

Work Experience:
  • 1 year relevant work experience.
  • Previous experience in mathematical computations.


Preferred Qualifications

Education: PhD in computational mathematics, computer science or a related discipline.

Work Experience: 2 years of experience including the following:
  • Develop mathematical optimization algorithms related to radiotherapy for cancer and other related diseases.
  • Specifically address FLASH therapy, proton ARC therapy and spatially fractionated therapy.


Job Duties Outlined:
  • Conduct research applying computational mathematical techniques for benchmarking 3D dosimetry systems.
  • Develop quality assurance methods applying mathematical and related computational techniques that utilizes 3D dosimetry and facilitates clinical interpretation.
  • Develop models that will allow for next generation treatment planning of cancers and other diseases.
  • Research the development of clinical or computational applications related to treatment planning
  • Develop models to reconstruct tumors; yet avoid organs taking into account healthy structures.
  • Plan and gather information from highly specialized experiments.
  • Collect and enter data in an organized manner and maintain data.
  • Analyze and evaluate data utilizing computational mathematics techniques to derive information from patterns.
  • Present data to researchers, physicians and colleagues.
  • Develop new algorithms and artificial intelligence for treatment of cancers and other diseases.
  • Research and gather tumor motion management to develop new treatment planning techniques and efficiencies through computational mathematics analysis.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Postdoc Expectations: The Postdoc will be expected to complete research projects under the guidance of the faculty mentor, record and interpret the results of their experiments in an (electronic) laboratory notebook, prepare publication-quality manuscripts (including figures and tables) and publish in peer-reviewed literature.
  • Read literature articles, develop new ideas, and assimilate the information into his/her project design/interpretation.
  • Dissemination of studies: Interact on a regular basis with their faculty mentor and members of the laboratory to discuss experimental design and interpretation of results.
  • Present research aims and findings at department seminars and at scientific meetings. Write and publish their results as first author in abstracts, manuscripts, and posters.
  • Submit fellowship applications, as eligible, to bolster research funding and CV building for projects.


Compliance: Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Department of Radiation Oncology, understand and follow all assigned duties, and attend regularly scheduled research team meetings.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
