POSITION: A full-time university staff position is available in Facilities as a Facilities Technician III. This is an expected-to-continue assignment which requires a six-month probationary period. The expected hourly hiring salary will be based on qualifications and experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must have knowledge of preventative maintenance and repairs to buildings and assist with more complex repairs. Principles, methods and practices using power tools and other construction related equipment. Safety techniques and materials used in electrical and mechanical trades. Knowledge of SDS materials.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of all methods, procedures, practices and tools used in the construction industry. Ability to read and interpret blueprints. Experience working with door hardware and key control, performing various type of flooring repairs and replacement, window and screen repair, as well as roofing and masonry repairs. Possess excellent customer service skills. Experience working with students. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and meet the requirements of the State of Wisconsin Fleet Vehicle Policy to drive a state vehicle.

DUTIES:

Maintenance of Buildings and Attachments
  • Inspect buildings for various kinds of damages and deficiencies.
  • Write building inspection reports identifying areas of needed repair.
  • Perform repairs on roofs, masonry, walls, floors, ceilings and all permanent attachments which are not electrical, plumbing or HVAC.
  • Replace damaged flooring and ceilings.
  • Make bulletin boards for new installations and for replacement of damaged units.
  • Repair furniture and assembles new furniture.
  • Replace damaged glass in doors and windows.
  • Repair or replaces window shades, blinds and drapes.
  • Work with carpenters, painters, facilities repair workers and others to accomplish maintenance and remodeling jobs.
  • Repair and adjusts toilet stalls, doors and partitions.
  • Install signs in various buildings as requested.
  • Install and remove window air conditioners.
  • Hang pictures, whiteboards, clocks, etc.
Maintenance of keys, cores, cylinders, safes, door locks, closers, hinges, and related hardware.Maintenance of key records and related items.
  • Duplicate keys.
  • Re-key cylinders.
  • Fit keys to our master system and replace lost keys.
  • Maintain inventory of needed key blanks.
  • Troubleshoot and investigate to correct keying problems.
  • Remove broken keys and other foreign material from locks, pick open all types of locks, disassemble and repair. Set up new locks when necessary. Repair or replace closers, hinges, exit devices, and other hardware.
  • Maintain inventory sufficient for needed repair and replacement.
  • Fabricate parts not otherwise available.
  • Respond to emergency calls for lock repair and take appropriate action.
  • Set combinations and change combinations on Simplex locks.
  • Keep complete and current filing system by number, room, item, user, etc. for key and combination records.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all key and combination records.
  • Prepare records for computerization.
  • Operate the computer to maintain and retrieve data relating to key and combination records.
Assistance to the Journeyman Trades staff in Remodeling and Maintenance Projects.
  • Cut, fit and, install metal and/or wood studs and plates and drywall to create or alter walls.
  • Cut, fit, and install mains, tees, wall angle, and tile to created or alter suspended ceilings.
  • Perform limited trade work below the Journeyman level.
  • Perform demolition work on areas for remodeling projects.
  • Haul supplies and materials to and from project areas.
  • Other duties as required to assist Journeyman Carpenters and Painter.
Provision of Support to Shops Supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of time and materials used for chargeback purposes and submit to Supervisor.
  • Provide estimates of time and/or materials needed to do jobs.
  • Review proposed projects and offer suggestions or point out possible omissions or problems to Supervisor and/or customer.
  • Perform various building condition inspections and associated reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.
THE UNIT: The unit of Facilities consists of approximately 140 staff members.
