Director of Communications & Content Strategy
Buffalo State, State University of New York, seeks candidates for the position of Director of Communications & Content Strategy.
The Director of Communications & Content Strategy provides direction, planning, and implementation of internal and external communications initiatives, and organizes and optimizes departmental content to advance the college’s mission, strategic plan, and institutional marketing plan. Manage and execute content development and planning (across platforms), editorial style and copy editing, and internal communication with faculty and staff. The director oversees staff members in news and content. Oversees media relations and major media contacts, organizes response to journalists, and proactively pitches news stories. Organize and manage story ideas that promote the college and support the institutional marketing plan. Act as a contact for media inquiries; serve as a liaison between media and executive-level officials. In conjunction with AVP, provide executive-level support in counseling senior campus officials, including the President’s Cabinet, in relation to internal and external communication issues. Develop communication and action plans to assist with issues management. May require occasional weekend and evening coverage as primary or secondary emergency contact. In conjunction with emergency (timely notifications) team, coordinate communication for the campus in the event of an emergency. Assist to develop policies and procedures. Stay current with national trends in emergency campus communication issues and practice. Oversee the coordination the college’s emergency communication strategy.
Required Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree. At least eight years of increasingly responsible communications, content development, and media relations experience. Successful track record of content development and strategy. Proven experience developing, managing, and maintaining a network of media contacts. Strong interpersonal skills and experience working effectively with a variety of constituencies. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to distill and clarify ideas, and the ability to synthesize ideas quickly under deadlines. Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in a related field. Demonstrated knowledge of social media, electronic, print,
and interpersonal communications. Professional affiliations (PRSA) and/or volunteer board experience.
