ASL Interpreter

Summary:
This is a 9-month, part-time staff position as an American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter who works as a member of the Accessibility and Disability Services (ADS) team in the Center for Student Success (CSS). Primary responsibilities include directly supporting deaf and hard of hearing students by providing interpreting services for classes, appointments, and other university-sponsored events. The ASL Interpreter serves as a liaison between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and the campus community. The ASL Interpreter functions as a member of the Center for Student Success team and supports other CSS initiatives as assigned.

Department: Academic Affairs: Student Success

Education/Experience:
Associate’s degree in Sign Language Interpreting or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certified or pursuing certification with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
  • Fluency in American Sign Language, including strong receptive skills and voicing skills.
  • Knowledge and competency in Deaf Culture.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, cultural competency, and customer service skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to respond to situations and concerns in a culturally competent manner.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure and adapt to rapidly changing priorities, while adhering to deadlines.
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Word, Excel, and other O365 Applications


Physical Requirements:
Sedentary work with occasional need for medium work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, keyboarding, and repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, and an office location with potential exposure to science laboratories, chemicals and chemical processes, biologicals and biological processes and magnetic field. Position requires additional hours for meetings and events, including days, evenings, and weekends.

Essential Functions:
  • Perform advanced interpreting services for deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Serve as liaison between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and members of our campus community.
  • Confer with faculty regarding the needs of deaf and hard of hearing students and the use of interpreters and Typewell transcriptionists in their classrooms.
  • Provide interpreting services for classes, appointments, and other university-sponsored events.
  • Refer students to appropriate college and/or community resources.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals, policies, and procedures within scope of work.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Abide by the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct, Stevenson University policies, and applicable state and federal laws.
