Position Summary Information

Position Summary

Bailey Library at Slippery Rock University seeks a one-year, part-time temporary, nine-month faculty librarian. This position is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the library catalog as a gateway to all formats of library acquired information resources. In addition, this position participates in the weekly rotation of research services, and may serve as subject liaison.

Since this is a 75% position and per the collective bargaining agreement between the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) and the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF), Article 23.2b:, this part-time position will be scheduled for no more than 27 hours per week.

Metadata Responsibilities
  • Performs original and enhanced cataloging of library material of all types, formats, and languages conforming to national and local cataloging and metadata standards and schema.
  • Oversees the creation and maintenance of the library catalog. Develops strategies and tools for quality control. In coordination with other library faculty members, develops methods of ensuring that the library catalog will meet the needs of campus, off-campus, and consortia constituencies
  • Develops plans and methods to provide appropriate catalog access to electronic resources
  • Coordinates with the Resource Acquisitions Unit on the addition of bibliographic records to the library database for all types of electronic resources
  • Oversees the operation of the Bibliographic Services Unit. Plans and organizes the workflow of cataloging, metadata, and database management
  • Trains, supervises, and evaluates the work of Bibliographic Services staff in conjunction with library faculty
  • Coordinates with the Resource Acquisitions Unit to maintain efficiency of technical services workflow and ensure accurate bibliographic and holding information in local and national databases
  • Coordinates with Circulation Unit on inventory of library collections and related activities
  • Works collaboratively with other library faculty members on projects to provide access to digitized materials, including coordinating efforts to add holdings to the library database for electronic theses and dissertations.
  • Maintains awareness of current technology regarding bibliographic services, incorporating them into the local automated system as appropriate. Provides training in cataloging and new metadata standards
  • Serves as liaison to vendors related to Bibliographic Services operations
Additional Responsibilities
  • Participates in the research services rotation.
  • Fulfills other responsibilities as assigned to support the mission of the library and the university
  • May serve as subject liaison to one or more academic departments.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Library Science from anALAaccredited institution or equivalent OR completion of a Master's degree in Library Science from anALAaccredited school by August 26, 2024
  • Demonstrated cataloging/metadata experience
  • Demonstrated catalog database management experience
  • Demonstrated experience withMARCformat andOCLCcataloging utility
  • Successful completion of an on-campus interview
Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate will also have some combination of the skills or attributes described below:
  • Experience in original cataloging of resources in audiovisual formats and/or foreign languages
  • Experience with institutional or digital repositories
  • Experience in the maintenance of authority data
  • Experience with Alma and/or Primo system
  • Supervisory experience in cataloging and database management
  • Work experience in an academic setting
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills
