Job Summary:
The purpose of this position is to provide and maintain a safe and aesthetically pleasing outdoor environment for the Regis Community. This is accomplished by performing all aspects of vehicle, aerial platform, emergency generators and landscape equipment maintenance and repair, in order to keep the equipment operating in a safe and effective manner. This includes, but is not limited to, engine, clutches, carburetors, and transmission overhauls, welding fabrication of all types, brakes, windshield repair, minor body work, tire repair, vehicle parts inventory and preventative maintenance practices, as well as assisting in all aspects of landscape maintenance and snow removal. This position shall be responsible for all the required equipment training of all Physical Plant staff as well as the ongoing required annual training on all equipment requiring such training. Training shall include safe operations of all equipment utilized by Physical Plant employees as well as proper cleanup, handling and disposal of hazardous materials associated with equipment. This position will assist the Landscape Manager and work in conjunction with the existing Lead Landscape Maintenance workers at the senior level in the oversight of landscape and other crew members in excess of twenty individuals at a time in a lead work capacity. This position will also project manage staff to complete projects as assigned. This includes responsibility for tracking project budget, purchases, labor and completion of final punch list items. The position will supervise and direct the day-to-day activities of one half time Mechanic Assistant to assist and accomplish the duties described in this job description. This position will assume the charge of the department when the Landscape Manager is absent.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential:

7% Assist in all aspects of landscape maintenance, parking lot maintenance, and irrigation system maintenance as assigned. This position will assist peer lead workers in the landscape department in the coordinating, scheduling, managing, and supervision of the entire landscape staff including full- time temporary and seasonal employees, work study students and community service workers and temporary agency staff. This position shall assist in this capacity in the following: the fertilization, mulching, mowing, pruning, weeding, planting, aerating, graffiti removal, sidewalk, and parking lot repair, general gardening, sign repair, pesticide applications, and other duties as assigned. Also, this position shall act as the lead worker in the bulk of the in - house construction projects within the landscape department.

20% Diagnose and repair 2 and 4 cycle engine equipment common to the trade, to include but not limited to: cleaning or overhauling the carburetor, timing, plugs, exhaust ports, various types of pumps, mower decks, bearings, belts, pulleys, and pull cords as needed. Diagnose and repair minor and major problems that develop with the vehicles and equipment used by Regis University. Minor problems include but are not limited to: hydraulic systems, mower decks, replacing belts, batteries, alternators, fuel pumps, starters, carburetors, exhaust systems, minor electrical repairs, and repairing tires. Major repairs such as vehicle engine overhaul, clutch replacement, major electrical problems, equipment adaptations, transmission overhaul, welding fabrication in all areas will be assigned to this position, but at times may be assigned pending complexity and schedule.

20% This position will provide supervisory and lead work oversight on special projects as assigned and of varying complexity. Most of these projects will consist of the most complex projects done with Physical Plant staff (in-house) and will at times take weeks and even months to complete. Projects often involve this position to engage in extensive overtime, project management, coordination and job assignment decisions to others on work crews varying in size from a few to nearly a dozen individuals. Maintain worker certification and perform asbestos abatement as needed in accordance with governing laws and within required safety parameters.

25% Supervises motor pool operations, maintains and documents a preventative maintenance program for all vehicles, equipment and landscape machinery used by Regis University, and as otherwise assigned to include but not limited to: tune ups, overhauls, checking, maintaining and/or replacing fluids, checking tightness of bolts, lubrication and routine visual inspections, and ensuring proper operation of equipment and equipment PMs are completed by operators. This position requires the ability to coordinate and schedule with other Department's at Regis University, the maintenance of each Regis University vehicle used by Departments twice annually to ensure the safe operation of all vehicles operated by Regis University.This will also include the unanticipated and unplanned repairs and customer requests that invariably result from vehicle fleet support and maintenance. The total numbers of individual pieces of equipment and vehicles-maintained numbers close to 200. This position requires the provision of thorough training and documentation of that training to all equipment operators or potential operators on an ongoing basis as needed that includes both operation and safety. Oversees electronic maintenance program to assure proper life cycle is obtained and maximized. Responsible for keeping and maintaining current registration on all licensed vehicles.

8% Using snow removal machinery, hand tools, ice-melt and sand, maintain all concrete and asphalt surfaces in a condition that is clear of all snow and ice, and in a manner that is safe and efficient to preserving all structures, objects, and plant life. To achieve this, snow and ice removal must occur at all hours of the day, night, weekdays, weekends and holidays, during and after the storm. This position will assist in the supervision of snow removal crews and at times will solely run crews as necessary in the event of round the clock removal efforts and in the absence of the Landscape Manager. This position has the authority and responsibility to tag out and refuse operation of any vehicle and or piece of equipment that he or she determines as unsafe and the duty to notify all potential operators of the unsafe situation precluding operation and then to notify the Landscape Manager when a mechanical device is diagnosed as malfunctioning in such a way that use of said device could result in harm to operator, itinerants, or to the device itself.

15% Able to reconstruct or repair vehicle parts when new or used parts are not immediately available. Requires through knowledge of various welding techniques (TIG, MIG and ARC) included. This position will provide welding fabrication services as needed for the entire Plant and the University as a whole on an as needed basis. In addition, this position shall have authority to recommend and negotiate vehicle and equipment procurement as directed and shall suggest needed procurements to his/ her Manager and Directors on a semiannual and annual basis or as requested. This position chairs the equipment task force, which prioritizes all equipment the plant needs annually.

5% Inspect, maintain and trouble shoot all emergency generators. Keep accurate and up to date documentation of each unit. Each of these units provide essential last line of protection to critical equipment needing to be operational at all times and especially in the event of a power outage. The operation of said equipment is vital for the University to remain operational.

Other:
  • Recommend expenditures of the budget in agreement with the Landscape Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Be available to assist with scheduled events as assigned as well as be available to assist in emergencies whenever possible by assisting those personnel for the trade.
  • Perform related duties as necessary to support the Regis mission.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education:
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.


Experience:
  • Eight (8) years' experience in diagnosing and repairing various vehicles and landscape maintenance equipment.
  • Four (4) years' experience required acting in the capacity of a lead worker or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years' experience in project management.
  • Can operate all machinery common to the trade: loader, various mowers, trencher, snow plow, edger, sprayer, and various hand tools.
  • Must have or the ability to obtain a commercial driver license (CDL) with hazmat, tanker and passenger endorsements for the ability to transport fuel and drive large buses.
  • Must be a certified ASE mechanic and/or observed equivalent experience.
  • Must have a welding certification or the ability to gain a welding certification within 2 years of employment.


WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions and temperature extremes.
  • This job will require working in dusty, dirty, wet, cold, hot, and noisy conditions.
  • Must work outdoors in all weather conditions and extreme temperatures.
  • Overtime required and weekend and/or evening work. Vacation time may be restricted during peak periods, particularly April through October.
  • In order to meet University needs any employees work schedules may be changed on a temporary or permanent basis at any time with little notice.
  • Will be required to carry and use a hand held 2-way radio while on the job.
  • Ability to participate in emergency and call back programs to abate facilities problems and emergencies during off hours through the use of communication systems, radio, and emergency cellular phone or pager. This position must supply and maintain a reliable and consistent means for 24 hour contact while they are performing the role as the on - call staff member and/or during the threat of inclement weather.


Driving Required:

It is an essential requirement of this position to have and maintain a valid Colorado Driver's License as well as maintain insurability through the University funded insurance carrier by maintaining a satisfactory driving record. Any changes in the Incumbent's driving record at any time during his or her employment must be reported immediately to his or her supervisor.

Other Requirements:

Ability to drive University owned vehicles off campus. Some overtime required. Vacation time may be restricted during peak periods.
