Postdoctoral Scholar

The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar in the John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering (EME).

The Postdoctoral Scholar will serve as the research coordinator for the project, interfacing with faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, coordinating the development of all analytical models, including the up/down-scaling required to combine predictions at meso - and local - scales, datasets, and visual communication records for the project. The project objectives follow here:
  • Develop a multi-pollutant (PM2.5, NO2, SO2, O3, and VOCs), daily, air quality dataset across the Marcellus and Utica shale regions from 2004 to 2023 at a resolution of 1 km using a combination of remote sensing, ground measurements, and dispersion modeling.
  • Develop a daily dataset of unconventional oil and gas activity and an inventory of expected emissions across the study region during the 2004-2023 timeframe that includes drilling, fracturing, transport, and compression.
  • Produce spatiotemporal estimates of population exposure to these pollutants and estimate overall risk and associated health burden, including an evaluation of exposure to economically disadvantaged areas.
  • Estimate the overall proportion of measured emissions that originate from the unconventional oil and gas industry together with the impact of specific regulatory policies and technical changes in industry processes on air quality in the region.

Qualifications:
  • Must have completed a Ph.D. in Engineering, Meteorology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Geosciences, or a related field focused on air quality-related research by the start of appointment.
  • Experience in data analytics and statistical modeling is required. It is especially desired that that experience includes residual deep learning networks and other machine learning techniques (artificial neural networks, classification and regression trees, random forests, etc.).
  • Experience working with pollutant dispersion models such as AERMOD is desired.
  • Experience working with remote sensing data on air pollution is desired, such as MODIS, OMI, TROPOMI, etc.
  • Experience working with US census data and exposure assessments is desired.

The Pennsylvania State University's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences takes an active role in building talented, inclusive and culturally competent workforce. We understand that our shared future is guided by basic principles of fairness, mutual respect, and commitment to each other. Applicants should share this commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusive excellence, and belonging and of engagement that creates an inclusive environment in their department/workplace.
