John M. Anderson Professor in the Visual Arts (Assistant Teaching Professor)

The School of Visual Arts at Penn State seeks a colleague to serve as the John M. Anderson Professor for the 2024-2025 academic year. Ideally, this 36-week appointment will begin on August 12, 2024.

The College of Arts and Architecture is working to establish a culture of anti-racism and anti-oppression that embraces each person's identity, fosters a culture of inclusion, and promotes equity through curricula, values, standards, ideals, policies, and practices. The ideal candidate will provide evidence of their experience with, and interest in, contributing to these goals.

This appointment carries administrative, teaching and service duties, as follows:

Administrative:
  • Coordinate Anderson Lecture Series


Teaching:
  • 4 courses per year (two Fall 2024 and two Spring 2025)
  • Courses will be in the Foundations area


Service:
  • Chair Anderson Lecture Series (ALS) subcommittee


The Anderson Lecture Series (ALS) consists of one visiting artist per month each academic semester (up to eight per academic year). To carry out this function, the successful candidate will contact/invite guests, negotiate dates/honoraria, make all arrangements for the visits (with the help of SoVA staff), and accompany guests while in town (or arrange for an ALS subcommittee member to do so). While visiting, artists interact with at least one class of students, and give a public lecture; sometimes workshops or exhibitions are also arranged; meals with a small group of faculty may also take place.

Managing funds and reconciling expenses is done with the approval of SoVA Director and assistance from staff members.

Qualifications:
  • A terminal degree in Art or related area
  • Teaching experience desirable
  • Experience with events coordination
  • Evidence of equitable considerations, awareness, and practice regarding curricula development, inclusive practices in educating diverse student bodies or working with a diverse faculty and staff, along with evidence of working collectively to cultivate a culture that fosters success and enables all members of a college community to thrive.


An office on campus and computer will be made available to the successful candidate.
