Endowed Professor, Chair for the Center of Brain Health

Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD, is inviting applications from well-established and dynamic neuroscientists for an Endowed Professorship to chair our new Center for Brain Health. The Endowed Chair will have the opportunity to help define the mission and vision of the Center and will be responsible for the Center's scientific leadership and general administration. The individual should have a strong interest in transdisciplinary work. The incumbent will develop a strategic plan to attract external funding, mentor junior faculty, postdocs, and graduate students, and network with other academic centers on- and off-campus. The Endowed Professor will interact with government and industry in Maryland and beyond and advocate for and promote MSU in national and international forums.

The successful applicant will have a nationally and internationally recognized track record of research accomplishments, including current publications and funding, substantial leadership experience, and a strong interest in health disparities research. The Endowed Chair will carry a faculty appointment in the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences (SCMNS), most likely within the Department of Biology. The incumbent must meet or exceed the requirements for a full professorship in the SCMNS. The successful applicant also has a track record of mentoring/teaching graduate students. The Center will be associated with a graduate training program.

All areas of Neuroscience will be considered, but a background in neurocomputational and data science approaches and neurogenetics/neurogenomics/epigenetics, as well as a background in neuroengineering and Neuroscience-Inspired AI, will be valuable. Experience with translational research concerning areas of health disparities in brain sciences will be a plus.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a brief statement of past research accomplishments and current research interests, a statement of leadership accomplishments and philosophy, and a statement of commitment to diversity and inclusion. The recruitment committee at MSU will independently solicit letters of recommendation. Candidates may indicate a potential conflict of interest in this regard.

Morgan State University is Maryland's Preeminent Public Urban Research University and a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Founded in 1867 as the Centenary Biblical Institute, MSU is today an R2 institution with a rapidly growing research portfolio aiming to become an R1 institution within our current 10-year strategic plan. MSU offers 140 academic programs (including 23 programs leading to the doctoral degree) and serves over 9,000 students. The university provides cutting-edge core laboratory facilities in cellular/molecular biology and data science, among others.

The overall focus of the Center of Brain Health at MSU is to conduct rigorous research on brain science and health disparities and train a diverse body of scholars in brain science/neuroscience. The Center will be strategically situated at the intersection of the life sciences and information technology/engineering (big data, machine learning) and strongly emphasize health disparities research. A prominent focus of the Center will be on brain health related to African Americans, a very understudied area in brain research. The Center will be collaboratively engaged with other new Centers at MSU, such as the Center for Urban Health Equity and the Center for Data Science and Data Analytics. The Center will also serve as a collaborative hub for external academic, government, and industry interests in Maryland and beyond. The Center will be associated with a graduate training program.

Requested Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in a relevant field from an accredited university. The successful candidate will have a nationally and internationally recognized track record of research accomplishments, including current publications and funding, substantial leadership experience, and a strong interest in health disparities research.
