Duties and Responsibilities
- Work with other members of the veterinary care team to perform daily rounds to monitor ongoing clinical cases and triage of new animal observations. Communicate animal health concerns with research staff and follow up to make sure all concerns are taken care of. Maintain observation reports.
- Perform physical examinations; x-rays; collect, prepare and submit biological samples for diagnostic testing; administer medications and treatments under direct supervision of the clinical veterinarian. Communicate with veterinarian(s) and laboratory personnel to notify and update regarding the status of clinical cases.
- Maintain multiple rodent colonies including multiple breeding schemes, timed breeding, collection of samples for genotyping, identification, and weaning. Understand basic rodent care as well as breeding strategies, basic rodent genetics and rodent identification. Communicate regularly with research staff regarding their rodent colonies.
- Perform specific procedures to support the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab Coordinator with embryo microinjection, animal surgeries and assisted reproductive technologies such as sperm cryopreservation, embryo cryopreservation, and in vitro fertilization.
- Assist the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab Coordinator with sanitization verification procedures.
- Assist with the rodent colony health monitoring program (Sentinel Program) and incoming rodent quarantine program. Responsibilities include scheduling of quarterly and quarantine sentinel shipments with the diagnostic laboratory, and ordering of replacement sentinels.
- Process electronic wean, separation, and transfer request forms. Create breeder and temporary cage cards as requested by research or CMF husbandry staff. Print cage cards and place on the technician desk.
- Update weekend instructions each week to alert weekend staff about animals under treatment or needing close monitoring. Forward to the Clinical Veterinarian for approval and then to the Operations Manager for husbandry instructions and distribution.
- Assist the Clinical Veterinarian or other qualified individuals with surgical procedures. Prepare sterile instrument packs, surgical suite and animals for aseptic surgery. Under the direction of the Clinical Veterinarian, administers anesthetic agents, intravenous fluids and monitors anesthesia and post-surgical recovery.
-Process newly arrived USDA covered species; observe for signs of illness or physical problems, assign a Loyola accession number, perform a complete physical exam, initiate treatment/vaccinations (at the discretion of the veterinarian) per “Quarantine, Conditioning, and Preventive Health” Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for each individual species. Perform physicals per SOPs.
- Audit permanent data such as: individual animal records, surgical and experimental records, controlled substance usage, post-operative care records, health records, animal census reports, enrichment logs and other data as directed by the supervisor.
- Responsible for management of assigned special husbandry areas (i.e. barrier facilities). These areas may include responsibility for special duties such as implementing the environmental enrichment program, containment protocols, and other special duties as assigned by the veterinary staff.
- Responsible for the care and maintenance of professional supplies, equipment, and instrumentation. Responsible for maintaining an inventory of drugs and supplies, and ordering new items as necessary. Maintain animal health treatment stock in various areas of the facility including therapeutic and emergency drugs, emergency packs, and other critical care items.
- Participate in the orientation and training of animal care staff, research personnel, and interns in proper animal restraint or other specialized techniques as necessary. Participate in various staff meetings, staff training and continuing professional education.
- Assist investigators with packing and shipping live animal exports and relocations.
- Perform necropsy procedures as assigned by the veterinarian and process tissues for histologic evaluation if necessary.
- Manage small animal imaging with PET/MR.
- Must be willing to work with the animal husbandry team and provide assistance when necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
