Associate Vice Provost for Student Engagement and Dean of Students
Associate Vice Provost for Student Engagement and Dean of Students
Johns Hopkins University
Johns Hopkins University (JHU) seeks an Associate Vice Provost for Student Engagement and Dean of Students (AVPDOS) who will play a vital part in leading the University’s student development strategy to facilitate and support student engagement and enhance the student experience with a focus on fostering a strong sense of community and student belonging. The AVPDOS will be responsible for developing and implementing strategy and managing operations to support undergraduate student engagement, leadership development, and student development. The AVPDOS will serve as a partner and advisor to student affairs units within the schools to ensure that the processes, outcomes, and engagement efforts for graduate student life across the divisions and schools meet the needs of JHU students. As such, the ideal candidate will have experience working with all learner groups. In addition, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience and success working in roles where collaboration and partnership is critical in meeting student needs.
Reporting to the Vice Provost for Student Affairs, Rachelle Hernandez, the AVPDOS will lead the strategic and operational effectiveness of the administrative, programmatic, and auxiliary areas within the Student Engagement and Dean of Students portfolio. The AVPDOS will oversee six direct reports, a budget of approximately $10 million, and the following offices: Student Engagement, the Center for Social Concern, Scheduling and Event Services, and Student Transitions and Family Engagement. The AVPDOS will also be responsible for the implementation and management of the facilities, staffing, programming, and management of the new Hopkins Student Center opening in fall 2024.
The next AVPDOS will be a student development expert and strong student engagement leader with experience developing and implementing effective strategic student engagement efforts—and someone who loves what they do and whose passion for this work is contagious, inspiring, and motivating to staff and the University community. The ideal candidate is student-centered, curious, and solution-seeking, understands the student academic experience, and possesses a can-do attitude and has preferable experience managing the administration and operations of a student center or student union. The successful AVPDOS candidate will possess an understanding of higher education and governance structures that may impact decision making at research universities.
The next JHU AVPDOS will be committed to the dignity and equity of all persons and will employ a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens to his/her/their approach to student engagement and student life at John Hopkins, and whose previous student life experience demonstrates efficacy in leadership from this lens. JHU is seeking an equity-minded, inclusive, student development leader with demonstrated experience leading an effective, and collaborative holistic student engagement effort. The next leader will be someone capable of leading a concerted effort, with unit and university partners, who elevates the JHU student experience and ensures that every student is able to find, experience and engage in a supported and connected JHU community that supports student development. The preferred candidate will have previous experience in key positions of educational and/or administrative leadership serving in a highly visible leadership role working with undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, faculty, and staff.
If you love working with students and are passionate about helping students make the most of their time at the university and opportunities to support their learning and development — we invite you to apply!
