Sports Trending Reporter
The Detroit Free Press/freep.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a vibrant journalist who can attack each assignment with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind — especially when it comes to trending sports stories that resonate with our audience.
This new position will tackle stories beyond the realm of our beat writers, on subjects proven to draw traffic across our digital platforms.
Those subjects include but are not limited to the Detroit Lions, Tigers, Red Wings and Pistons along with Michigan, Michigan State and other local colleges, and sports celebrities. This person must be proven in three areas of journalism: good, clean and fast.
Responsibilities:
• Report and write news of the day across the Detroit and Michigan sports landscape, not only on topics that are trending but also by developing coverage that anticipates our audiences' interests on any given day, delivering that content on their preferred platforms.
• Localize national topics by focusing on the themes that appeal to our current and future readers, especially when those topics brush upon and tap into our core coverage areas.
• Jump on urgent stories of regional importance, including breaking news, hirings, firings, drafts, recruiting signing days and trade deadlines, etc.
• Lead the conversation about trending opportunities and creative ways to pursue them.
• Work with editors to evaluate what is working and what is not and develop ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.
Requirements:
• Bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least 5 years of reporting/editing experience.
• Proficiency building a brand on social media.
• Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.
• Able to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing industry.
• Knows how to use time efficiently in a 24-hour newsroom.
• Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment.
• Deep understanding of and curiosity about competition for our customers’ time and money.
• Self-motivation and self-direction.
• Applies innovative, creative thinking to support Free Press goals.
• Writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style.
• Command of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct.
• This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
• Pre-employment background check and urinalysis drug screen required.
We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
1. Your updated current resume – one to two pages.
2. A cover letter that outlines your interest in the position and how you would approach the job.
3. Links to 3-6 online samples of your work. Show us what you’ve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.
It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
