SCHOOL BUS MECHANIC

  • High School diploma required
  • 3-5 years successful heavy-duty truck / diesel / bus mechanic experience
  • Advanced Mechanic Schooling preferred
  • CDL with school bus and air brake endorsement (or ability to obtain these endorsements)

  • $60,000 Annual Salary

Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday, possibly some Saturdays

Position Summary:

To keep the school district fleet maintained in a manner that will provide safe and efficient transportation for the students.

Essential Duties and Functions:

  • Provides for routine maintenance of the bus fleet.
  • Completes bus repair on site, including but not limited to minor body work, brake jobs, tire repairs and replacement, oil changes, and light replacements.
  • Must be able to meet driver / CDL requirements.
  • Arranges with local garages to provide repair service that cannot be provided by the school district.
  • Works with the Department of Education to maintain Fleet records and prepares buses / small fleets for bi-annual State inspection.
  • Identifies, trains and supports a crew which may be utilized to clean and assist with minor bus repairs based on an individual's abilities.
  • Mechanic provides own hand tools.
  • Will provide snow removal, salt sidewalks, clean snow from buses, and starts buses early as the weather dictates.

Education:

High school diploma.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities / Experience:

  • CDL with school bus and air brake endorsement (or ability to obtain these endorsements.)
  • Has the ability to utilize computer software / technology to diagnose and repair bus faults and warning lights.
  • Must be able to learn and understand computer tracking software and surveillance equipment.
  • Self-motivated to initiate and prioritize tasks without direction.

Working Conditions:

  • Heated garage / office.
  • May be exposed to inclement weather.

Mental Demands / Physical Demands / Environmental Factors:

  • Must be in good physical condition and able to work at varying heights.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and depth perception.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions.
  • Will be required to efficiently operate equipment such as snow blowers, etc.
  • Requires climbing ladders, pushing and/or pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires considerable use of arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, bending, twisting and lifting.
  • Frequent bending and twisting at neck and trunk.
  • Must be mobile and able to perform a variety of manual tasks including repetition.
  • Ability to reach above the head and forward 0 to 24 inches and on occasion up to 36 inches.
