Maintenance Custodian

Under the direct supervision of the Facilities Supervisor, this position will be responsible for the cleanliness, organization of each municipal facility. This position will perform a wide variety of custodial tasks and perform basic maintenance tasks and report any problems that are discovered.

Essential Job Functions

  • Make daily inspections of assigned buildings to determine work requirements
  • Sanitize restrooms, showers, and locker rooms as needed
  • Sweep, dust, and mop areas of the assigned buildings, including stairwells
  • Empty waste and recycling containers
  • Vacuum and shampoo carpet
  • Clean and maintain breakroom and appliance
  • Set up and take down furniture for building activities
  • Assist with supply delivery unloading and storage within facility 
  • Responsible for care, maintenance, and inventory of all cleaning products, supplies, and equipment
  • Ensure areas of building are secure and report any problems or areas of concern to supervisor
  • Establish and determine custodial program needs
  • Assist with contracted cleaning services
  • Perform minor repairs and routing maintenance of buildings, machinery, and equipment
  • Assist with snow removal, and salting around buildings
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor

Requirements of Work

High school diploma or GED equivalent. One to three years of previous sanitation, maintenance, or custodial experience is required, and a valid Wisconsin driver's license with a good standing driving record.

Knowledge of

  • Cleaning equipment and safety hazards
  • Tools, equipment, building codes, and building maintenance procedures

Ability to

  • Identify safety and building construction hazards
  • Work independently with minor supervisory consulting 
  • Follow oral and written instructions

Skill in

  • Small equipment and building maintenance repair

  • Must be able to lift various weights from floor to waist on a regular basis.  Specific tasks include lifting maintenance equipment, supplies, construction equipment or other items.
  • The worker must be able to move across a variety of terrain conditions including uneven ground.
  • The employee is required to operate heavy equipment, motor vehicles or snow removal equipment for long periods of time.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.  
  • The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. 
  • Regular exposure to particularly demanding, unpleasant, strenuous, and/or hazardous elements such as dealing with inclement weather, operating heavy equipment, etc.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  
  • When assigned to emergency call duty, must respond, and if necessary, report to duty in all weather conditions and at all hours of the day or night.
