Community Service Officer 

The Sun Prairie Police Department is currently seeking a part-time and a full-time Community Service Officer.  
Full-time hours will me M-F from 6 :00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., part-time hours will be Thur - Sat from 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

This is a non-sworn position that will be responsible for promptly and effectively carrying out routine Police Department service duties, which do not require the performance of a sworn Police Officer, and other limited code enforcement duties.

Essential Job Functions

  • Enforces the City's parking restrictions both on public and private property through the issuance of parking tickets, identifying abandoned vehicles and, when required, having illegally parked vehicles towed.
  • Investigates animal complaints, including animal bites, and enforces ordinances including the impoundment of unsecured animals and authorizing the release of animals when claimed by the respective owners.
  • Recovers, secures, processes, and returns property and evidence.. 
  • Provides assistance to the Emergency Medical Service and Fire Department, which may include assisting as a first responder to calls.
  • Directs traffic.
  • Work collaboratively with the building inspection department to conduct initial and follow up visits regarding code violations for grass and sidewalks.
  • Investigates and completes forms for various minor complaints.
  • Cleans department vehicles, coordinates vehicle maintenance with the Fleet department, maintains supplies, and delivers vehicles and equipment to the maintenance division for repairs and maintenance.
  • Assists with special events and parades.
  • Identifies and investigates complaints of property based code violations. 
  • Coordinate and execute the Med Drop Program.
  • Assists with other miscellaneous tasks as assigned such as running mail between facilities and obtaining supplies from local businesses.
  • Assists with municipal court as needed.
  • Assists with fingerprinting citizens as scheduled.
  • Relief person for court officer.
  • Assists with the inventory and cleaning of building storage and evidence areas.

 

Requirements of Work

High school diploma or GED equivalent. Previous property/evidence or law enforcement experience is desirable.

Knowledge of

  • Locations and streets in the City of Sun Prairie.
  • Police Department policies and procedures during non-emergency calls.

Ability to

  • Organize and complete a variety of work assignments and understand department procedures and regulations as well as controlling laws.
  • Communicate information accurately and effectively under adverse conditions and able to complete reports in a timely manner.
  • Have a sense of urgency, and ability to take good directions.

Skill in

  •  Problem solving and high-level of discretion and decision-making.
  •  Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the   public. Must execute duties firmly, tactfully, courteously, and impartially.
  •  Use of a two-way radio and computer is preferred.

  • Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. 
  • Some work is performed in an office setting; hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.  
  • The employee is exposed to severe weather while performing tasks. 
  • The employee is exposed to many unknown conditions, including possible hazardous sites, dust, odors, noise, vibrations, and dangerous or violent animals and/or people. 
  • The employee is frequently exposed to life-threatening situations.
